Night Hawks

This is a whimsical vision of redtails kettling by the light of a full moon. The silhouettes of the birds are achieved with a variety of techniques:

The lightest birds are screen printed using a chemical which removes the color from the silk;

The dark blue birds are screen printed with dye;

The golden birds are screen printed with rice paste and dusted with powdered mica;

The gold birds in the orange fringed rectangles are done in the previous manner onto a silk and brass woven fabric. They are then appliquéd to the background fabric and free motion stitched.

The moon is a silk "hankie" which is unspun silk stretched directly from the cocoon. I dyed this and covered it with the silk/brass fabric and free motion stitched.

The branches are printed using fabric paint.
