Lutra canadensis - North American River Otter
Someday I will see a North American River Otter playing alongside a riverbank or sliding down a snow covered hill. For now I will settle for the mount at the University of Wisconsin - Madison Zoology Museum where artists may draw from the extensive collection.
I've used a piece of silk charmeuse that was dyed with walnut husks and modified with an iron mordant. The otter is drawn in graphite pencil on Japanese Kozo paper and laminated to the charmeuse. I have chosen not to add color to the animal, because it is a depiction of a mounted specimin.
The work is secured to a handmade solid walnut hanger.
