Catch of the Day
Bald Eagles congregate on the Wisconsin River in Prairie du Sac, not far from where I live. In the winter, the birds come to the open water at the hydroelectric dam to fish.
My husband and I have been watching these raptors for a couple of decades, beginning at a time when the species' numbers were suffering from the effects of DDT. Banning the chemical has resulted in successful nests all along the lower Wisconsin River valley during the summer. Winter concentrates the Eagles into specific feeding and roosting sites and enable conservationists to count and monitor the population.
The fish surrounding this mature Bald Eagle are all found in the Wisconsin River.
